What does TV-L E 13 (65 resp. 100%) mean?

Doctoral fellows occupy part-time positions (65%), postdoctoral fellows occupy full-time positions (100%).
In both cases, the salary refers to the State Employee’s Salary Scheme, the so called “Tarifvertrag für den Öffentlichen Dienst der Länder” (TV-L).
As academic employees, doctoral and postdoctoral fellows belong to the payment group (Entgeltgruppe = E) 13.

At present the gross salary for doctoral positions is 2,286.86 € per month.
Postdoctoral fellows earn 3,517.36 € per month.

When will I be informed if my application was taken into consideration?

We will inform all applicants four weeks before the planned starting date at the latest if their applications were taken into consideration or not. 

 

I would like to apply for a doctoral position, but my final exams will take place after the deadline for handing in applications. Can I still apply?

Applicants must prove that they have completed their studies in order to apply for a doctoral position at GSDW. Therefore, an application can only be taken into consideration when all final exams were successfully passed.

 

I would like to apply for a doctoral position, I have passed my final exams, but I have not received my certificate yet. Can I still apply?

In this case, we need to receive a written confirmation from your university which shows, that you have successfully passed your exams. The final certificate can still be handed in later.

 

I would like to apply for a doctoral position. Do I have to choose a supervisor for my project before I hand in my documents?

No, if your application is successful, we will organize your assignment to one of our principal investigator’s field. But nonetheless, we recommend to have a look at the principal investigators’ profile.

 

I would like to apply for a postdoctoral position. Do I have to choose a mentor for my project before I hand in my documents?

No, if your application is successful, we will organize your assignment to one of our principal investigator’s field. 

 

I would like to apply for a doctoral position. Do I have to matriculate at LMU Munich?

For the application itself you do not have to matriculate. If you start your PhD studies at LMU Munich, please pay attention to the regulations set up by the corresponding faculties.

 

I would like to apply for a doctoral/postdoctoral position. Would I have to move to Munich, if my application is successful?

The working location for every fellow is Munich. Therefore, each fellow must choose a residence which allows him/her to fulfil their obligation to attend at GSDW.

 

Do I have to prove German or English skills in my application?

Our courses and seminars are held in German or English. Therefore, sufficient German and English skills are helpful. But still we do not need a certificate which shows your skills. 
We recommend all our fellows to take German classes when starting their work at GSDW in order to be able to handle everyday challenges and the university's administration. 
We also fund these courses. 

 

My referees have already written their letters of reference. Can they send in these letters to application@mzaw.lmu.de before I have handed in my documents?

Yes, we will process their letters before receiving your documents. 

 

My referees sent their letters of reference directly to me. Can I send them to GSDW together with my documents?

Yes, you can send one e-mail with all your documents and the letters of reference as seperate attachements. 

 

Can I also apply if my subject is not mentioned on the list of the subjects involved in GSDW?

Our list of subjects refers to the subjects represented by our Principal Investigators. Therefore, we have no possibilty to supervise projects from other fiels. 
LMU Munich's GraduateCenter is able to supply further information about other fields and possibilities for PhD and/or postdoctoral positions.
