International conference organized by Dr. Jean Evans, Dr. Paola Paoletti und Dr. Elisa Roßberger, and sponsored by the Graduate School Distant Worlds and the Institute of Near Eastern Archaeology, LMU Munich. The conference will take place at the Centre for Advanced Studies (Seestr. 3, 80802 München) within the framework of the CAS Senior Fellowship 2016/17 of Prof. Adelheid Otto and Prof. Walther Sallaberger.
The central aim of this conference is the meaningful integration of archaeological remains, textual sources, and the ancient visual record relating to Mesopotamian temple inventories of the third and second millennium BCE. We maintain that such a multidisciplinary approach will make the constitution of Mesopotamian sacred space through objects and practices more accessible. Special consideration will be given to the overall societal function as well as ideological and economic impacts of sacred gifting.

Die Fakultät für Kulturwissenschaften, das Münchner Zentrum für Antike Welten und die Graduiertenschule Distant Worlds laden herzlich ein zum ersten Vortrag der Gastprofessorin für Kulturgeschichte des Altertums, Elke Stein-Hölkeskamp.
Die Vortragsreihe trägt den Titel "Rang und Stil alla Romana. Aristokratische Lebenswelten von der Republik zur Kaiserzeit".
Der erste Vortrag "Einheit und Vielfalt? Lebensziele und Lebensentwürfe der römischen Aristokraten im Wandel" findet am 2. November 2016 um 18 Uhr c.t. im Senatssaal der LMU München (Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1, 80539 München) statt.
Die Graduiertenschule Distant World möchte diesen Anlass nutzen, um die ersten Absolventen des strukturierten Promotionsprogramms zu würdigen.

The introduction of writing in ancient societies considerably changed various domains of life. This manifest development raises a series of questions about the significance of writing in ancient social life. One dimension of that requires further investigation is the impact of writing on the cluster of ancient texts, practices, and ideas deemed magical. "Inscribing Power in Antiquity" proposes to discuss the following questions: How did the expansion of writing both reflect and impact ancient perceptions of the power of words? What is the relationship between the development and institutionalization of writing and its perceived power to alter the cosmos for the purposes, inter alia, of harming enemies, of healing sicknesses, or of casting out demons? To what extent did changes in medium and in writing work together in constructing new views of textuality in ancient ritual contexts?
